U.S. Embassy warns citizens of protest in Abuja over Iran conflict

The U.S. Embassy in Abuja has urged its citizens to remain indoors on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, due to a heightened risk of protests stemming from the conflict in Iran.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Embassy recalled that previous protests by some groups resulted in violent clashes between the group and Nigerian security forces.

“The Embassy strongly recommends that all U.S. citizens in Abuja remain in their residences on Wednesday, March 4,” the statement read in part.

The Embassy also listed actions U.S citizens are to take to ensure their safety, which includes avoiding crowds and areas where protests are taking place.

Citizens are urged to exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests, and monitor local media for updates.

“Be aware of your surroundings. Keep a low profile. Review your personal security plans and keep your cell phone charged in case of emergency. Carry proper identification. Stay alert, including at shopping centres, movie theatres, and places of worship. Familiarise yourself with emergency exits and egresses when you enter buildings and vary travel routes and times to reduce predictability,” the Embassy said.

“The Consular Sections of Embassy Abuja and Consulate General Lagos remain open. Please monitor our website for updates.”

The Embassy also announced that due to the potential for protests in Abuja, it has cancelled all visa appointments on Wednesday, March 4, 2026.

“Applicants will be contacted with information on how to reschedule. Please monitor our website and social media channels for further updates,” it said.
